És una tradicció que té lloc a diverses poblacions de Catalunya el dia del Corpues Christi, originada a la Catedral de Barcelona.
Hi ha constància que al segle XVI ja es feia a la font del claustre de la Catedral de Barcelona, on se n'encarregaven els escolans.

L'ou, un cop buit i amb un punt de cera per tapar el forat pel qual s'ha buidad l'ou, es col·loca sobre el raig d'aigua d'un brollador d'una font, de manera que fagi voltes sense caure.
A més, la font habitualment es guarneix amb flors i fruites del temps, com les cireres amb les quals es cobreix la tassa de la font, o la ginesta i els clavells.
